DJ Shannon C on the Mix:
Afro Beats / Wu Tang / Hip Hop – Recorded Live 07/09/20
I was recently a contestant on Pretty Lou’s #TurnTheTables season 2 show on IG Live. K. Foxx was the guest and she got to pick the sets. The rules were:
1. 10 minutes to play only music that fits the category
2. Original Edits. No Remixes or Mash Ups
3. No DJ Drops or Sound FX
4. NO INTERNET OR DOWNLOADS
5. At some point “DJ Monkey Wrench” will make a random request. You get 2 mins to play it and then return to the set.
6. All DJs get one pass. 2 strikes and you’re out.

My First Set was 2 Burna Boy songs and then all Afro Beats. I flubbed it the second song in with a hype intro edit of Drogba.

My Second set was Wu Tang Clan / Wu Tang Collabs and I got GOT by the DJ Monkey Wrench which was Jack Harlow’s What’s Poppin (Which I had previously downloaded but not added to Serato) That was my strike 2 so I was out.

I needed to make peace with these two missed opportunities, so I let them inspire this set.

While I was initially really embarrassed by the poor showing, I decided to use the opportunity as a lesson, both in putting myself out there more and failing forward. After all, the best learning happens outside of your comfort zone. I hope you enjoy this live set inspired by that experience, and that you never let a missed opportunity stop you from doing what you love. Enjoy!
